Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? … We’ll drink a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne. Happy New Year’s Eve 2024 — and happy new year from Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts! Episode 133 is a historic release for us! First of all, it is the three-year anniversary of our first release of Episode 001, on New Year’s Eve of 2021. Second, this episode marks the highest number of hosts that we have live on the call at the same time — count ’em, nine: Behold, this episode features Jay of the Dead, Dave “Dr. Shock” Becker, The Gillman Joel Robertson, Mister Watson, the Southern Gentleman GregaMortis, Count Mackula (intermittently), the Persuasive One Dave Zee, Spawn of the Dead, and our Official Contributor and resident Horror maestro Kagan “The Fruit Brute” Breitenbach! Regrettably, Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop and Ron Martin could not attend this recording; however, rest assured they were otherwise occupied in well-meaning and worthy pursuits!
During this show, we host an auditory New Year’s Eve party for you! In fact, the end of the episode even has a countdown for the ball-drop to 2025, so if you start playing this episode at exactly 9:56 p.m. (and 36 seconds) — in your time zone, then the runtime of this show coordinates with the 10-count down to 12 a.m. on January 1, 2025! Wooohoooo! So, if you don’t have other New Year’s plans, we hope you’ll party with us. But most importantly, we are here to bring you our in-depth Feature Review of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (2024) remake. We begin with SPOILER-FREE general thoughts. Then we give you our Ratings and Recommendations. And finally, we have a full-blown SPOILER discussion. All of these segments are indicated by the helpful time stamps below. Oh, and of course, we have our usual jackass antics throughout the show, but especially at the beginning and the end (so be sure to listen all the way to the end for a special surprise)! And Jay of the Dead even sneaks in a little Micro Horror Movie Review of the David Lee Fisher “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” remake from 2023, starring Doug Jones! “Succumb to the DORKness,” and ring in the new year with us!

Thank you for listening to Jay of the Dead’sNew Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts.
I finally watched Nosferatu 2024 (having also seen the original a couple times) and didn’t enjoy it much. Lily Rose-Depp just didn’t do it for me. The scene where she does a chicken dance before falling to her knees and ripping her dress open literally made me laugh out loud! I rated it a 7/10 on technical merit alone, but I can’t see myself rewatching it…
I was a bit disappointed that Doc Shock wouldn’t participate in the review, as I usually enjoy hearing what he has to say, but I appreciate everyone else’s takes. I was relistening to this episode and the Wacky Ass Christmas cast at work, and I noticed Dave seems awfully unenthused in general lately. I hope you’re doing well, Doc!
Always a pleasure, gents. Thanks for the episode!
Nosfaratu hits peacock Feb 21. Just throwing that out there if anyone hasn’t seen it yet.
YOU ARE AWE-SOME, Jay and the Horror Avengers!! I praise you fine people for so much cool content, especially for dropping this so fast and immediate after NOSFERATU has just been released in theatres! You guys start off ’25 big time!!!
Amen to that, my friend! Had a blast talking this film over with The Boys. Thanks for listening!!!!!!!!
Just so much love on how passionate and well thought you guys go into your deep dive discussions. I also appreciate your chemistry within the Avengers crew and how Jay guides the show….and I always loose my sh*t when Doc Shock gets all fired up, especially in this shows discussion!
I’ve seen this on the big screen twice already (with viewings of the 1922 and 1979 versions sandwiched in between, as well as Shadow of the Vampire, Coppola’s Dracula, and Argento’s awful take just for good measure), and will see it at least once more before the coming weekend is over. Robert Eggers doesn’t miss, and this can reasonably be called a masterpiece. My estimation of Nosferatu did come up on second viewing.
There are some articles and interviews out there that explain a lot about the approach to the design of the film and the character. The attention to period detail in all his films is simply staggering.
Gotta say it though, I strongly disagree with Mack’s take here. Even if he dislikes it, his rating completely ignores the objective merits of the film.
I heard the Labyrinth rumor as well, but I’m pretty dubious about that. The original mention came from “The InSneider,” whose scoops are wrong at least as frequently as they are right. Everyone else just picked it up and ran with it. And I really can’t see Eggers doing back to back remakes – particularly of something that is so far removed from the historically-based tales he usually tackles.
As a funny aside, when I watched Shadow of the Vampire on Prime recently, there was a seemingly unrelated picture used of Doug Jones and a Nosferatu makeup. I’m guessing that was from the 2023 Nosferatu mentioned during this cast.
Happy New Year to you all!
Jon! You really did you prep for this film! Well done! I tried to watch the 2023 Nosferatu before seeing this, as it’s the only version of this story I haven’t seen, but time ran out, darn it!
What’s funny here is that Mack and I both place Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula, in the highest esteem, yet we were so far apart in score on this film, right? It’s with the most brotherly of love that I say: My homie, Mack, confuses me sometimes! LOL. The filmmaking ALONE deserves 50 points at the very least! Haha.
As much as I love this movie… you all heard my score… I’m STILL waiting for the version of the Dracula Tale that… like the novel… just isn’t concerned with romance. Somewhere along the way, someone fixated on that romantic angle, and it’s persisting like a cockroach. For my money… and mine alone… this movie would have gotten a 10 if Orlock’s interest in Ellen had been purely a passing interest… something gained from stealing Hutter’s locket… some EXTRA thing to conquer along with everything else… like the monster he is. That’s just me, though. 🙂
