When you peer into the mirror, do you like what you see? What about when you just get out of the shower? That probably depends a great deal on your age… Here in Episode 007 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, we talk about the increasing appearance of Naked Old People in Horror movies! Sure, we got that dilapidated “dish” in Room 237 in “The Shining” (1980). But the appearance of saggy and baggy bods has surely ticked up in frequency over the past decade with films like, “REC 2” (2009), “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014), “The Visit” (2015), “The Witch” (2015), “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsommar” (2019), “It: Chapter Two” (2019), “The Dark and the Wicked” (2020),”Amulet” (2020), and of course, that brings us to our big Feature Review of Ti West’s “X” (2022)!
In addition to the new Ti West flick, in Episode 007 your favorite Horror hosts also bring you reviews of The Exorcism of God (2022), Umma (2022), Off Season (2022), You Are Not My Mother (2022), and Bhoothakaalam (2022). And as part of our usual, genre-defining PSAs, we even briefly discuss a couple a couple of non-Horror movies, namely, Deep Water (2022), Beneath the Surface (2022). Also in Episode 007, Jay of the Dead reveals the unforgettable true story of how Dr. Shock earned the nickname, “Back-Door Becker.” We also read an email from Candela, our Norwegian high-school student friend, who responds to our hosts’ answers (from Episode 006) to her question about American Horror movies influenced by the Cold War. Some of the boys were “deep in their cups,” as they say, while recording this episode, so our coherence may waiver somewhat from segment to segment.
And of course, you will get seven, Horror-themed Specialty Segments from each host, including Jay of the Dead’s It Could Happen to You Horror, Dr. Shock’s Macabre Film History, Gillman Joel’s Horror Lagoon, Mister Watson’s Horror Hierarchy, The Dead Zone with Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis’s Monsters on the Mantle, and Horror in Black and White by Mackula! Join us! (P.S. Sorry this episode was so damn late in releasing.)

Thank you for listening to Jay of the Dead’sNew Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts.
Mr Watson, Sir!
You are such a marvelous scholar and philosopher. Your additional insights into “natural” body horror are so much more articulate than mine; you make me look good! Thanks for the comments and insight.
And Jay was great too. 😀
How did I ever miss this comment?! Any complement I can get from Dr. Walking Dead means the world to me in a way that is almost perverse.
Just a quick message for Joel – the two Alice Cooper songs from Monster Dog are available in the CD boxset ‘The Life and Crimes of Alice Cooper’, along with more rarities. It might be hard to find now though. As a fellow Coop fan, who tried recording those songs onto cassette from the Monster Dog VHS back in the day, I had to let you know! Also, it’s been a while since I saw it, but I’m pretty sure the Coop didn’t dub his own dialogue, another actor did a fairly reasonable Coop voice as I recall. Quite a film!
I was so excited to hear that you covered “Ils” here. I haven’t heard it get a whole lot of press play anywhere, so was happy you reviewed it for your “It Could Happen To You” segment.
I just wanted to add a couple of thoughts to consider about “Ils” (“Them”, 2006). This one is definitely for the arthouse horror movie people out there. If you’re into that, I think this one will not disappoint.
This film has a strong writer/director team of David Moreau and Xavier Palud, and is carried with a stellar performance by its lead, Olivia Bonamy. I found her to be believable and charming, and was sympathetically rooting for her throughout the run of the film.
The directors kept a good pace going as well, which is cool given the primarily single location, simple premise, and small cast. One aspect that I thought was pretty effective was that the last hour of the movie is shot in real time so we feel every moment along with the characters. There is no later that night, or cutting to the next day, kind of scenes. No tension breaks for the viewer. For me it added a unique way of acheiving that sense of reality that I’m always looking for in horror movies.
Is it even horror?? I say yes, and what it may lack in gore, it fully makes up for as a strong little suspense film. This one could perfectly serve the role of segway-to-horror for your unsure friends, and might even impress seasoned horror fan professionals with it’s realistic style and suspenseful sections.
Maybe it’s because my dog’s nickname is “Ils”. Maybe it’s because it’s in French/Romanian, and subtitles make me feel smart. Maybe it’s my demographic because Home Invasion films are some of the scariest out there to me, as typically realistic allegorical representations revealing the weaknesses in the systems we have put in place to feel safe in the world. Maybe it’s just ‘them’. I don’t know, but this little indie thriller really works for me. If you allow yourself to get into the story, “Them” is a solid contribution to the Home Invasion subgenre, with great performances and a terrifyingly stark message reveal in the 3rd act.
I saw this in the movie theater when it came out, which I guess was kind of lucky because apparently it only opened in 5 theaters across the United States. I went in completely blind, and didn’t know what kind of movie I was in for, ghosts, serial killer, slasher, or what. I was pleasantly surprised how the story unfolds, and can see its direct influence on some later releasing, bigger budget, movies. I give “Ils” (“Them”, 2006) a 9 outta 10, with a strong rental recommendation for any arthouse horror lovers that missed this underrated gem. Again I appreciate you covering it here and giving it some air time!
Here is a list of my favorite Home Invasion movies (not ranked):
– Funny Games (1997, 2007)
– Kidnapped (2010)
– High Tension (2003)
– Inside (2007)
– Ils (2006)
– Straw Dogs (1971)
– The Strangers (2008)
– When a Stranger Calls (1979)
– Hush (2016)
The French film ‘Ills’ is absolutely #1. Such great atmosphere and horror!
Ok, guys, this lady has just shown us that violence and gore do not equal horror. Get that through your thick heads, guys! Violence and gore are not horror!!
Sad to see that the Mackula segment has one of the silliest and dumbest ratings I’ve ever seen anyone give anything. His segments was so promising until now!
I guess I’ll listen anyway, but I may just have to skip that segment from now on. It’s a shame.
Those drinks were really hitting by the end, weren’t they?
I know that taste is subjective, but I can’t help but think that Mackula did The Lighthouse a disservice by trying to watch it on a phone… on a plane. Robert Eggers pays such close attention to even the most minute details of his production design that his films really deserve to be seen on the biggest screen possible. (Seriously, even the buttons and fabrics used in costuming were period appropriate.) The cinematography of this film was stunning, and a great mix of modern techniques and antique equipment. And while it can easily be argued that the film isn’t a “traditional” horror movie, the caliber of performances from Dafoe and Pattinson is undeniable – they both give it their all. I’ll be interested to see him playing on a larger canvas (and with a larger budget and cast) next week when The Northman hits theaters.
I saw Offseason during SXSW 2021 and have been singing its praises ever since. I can’t wait to revisit the film. On the other hand, I saw The Exorcism of God during Fantastic Fest last year, and that really didn’t land for me at all. Too often it cribbed (or just ripped off) other, better films, and there’s a choice or two that made it impossible for me to get with the protagonist. But hey, Deadite Jesus looked pretty cool.

Hey guys!
Loving the podcast. It’s great to hear all you guys in one place. Now we need another meet up, so I can meet the rest of you guys. Anyway, I saw the movie X on opening night here in Iowa. There was about 20 other people in the Theater with me, which added to the excitement I already had. You could hear gasps during the saggy boobs parts! lol I loved this movie. I’ve been a fan of Ti West’s since House of the Devil. This had everything I wanted in a Horror Movie and more. I cringed, I got scared, I was turned on and felt dirty afterwards, in a good way. I’ll be buying this hopefully in 4k when it comes out. Can’t wait to see what else Ti has in store for us with this in the future.
I remember seeing Alligator when I was a kid on TV. I asked my parents how could something live in the sewer? This was about the same time that someone caught a Piranha in our local Lake. I could see how something like Alligator could happen. Look at all the issues Florida has had with pets getting loose or natural disasters causing issues. I haven’t seen this movie in years and need to revisited it again. It’s hard to watch anything else knowing the Lake Placid is out there also, which is my favorite Alligator movie.
Keep up the good work and stay healthy my friends.
As a board member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Livers, I have to inform Dr. Shock and Mr. Watson that their livers have filed restraining orders. Also, I have met people that viewed the infamous Milton Berle hog and they confirmed that he was indeed packing heat. Finally, as to Jay of the Dead’s VHS segment, I have long argued on the podcast that I do with my son that some horror movies look better on VHS. For example, the F/X in Friday the 13th (which I own on blu-ray), look great on tape but on any high def version, you can see the seems and other “flaws” that betray the film IMO. Keep up the great work and leave those livers alone!
