– Dr. Shock’s Macabre Film History shares four eerie tales involving celebrity ghosts and legends.
– Horror in Black and White by Mackula revisits the timeless clash of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)

Plus, we’ve got a unique concept discussion with Dave Zee where we test his process for making predictions about Horror movie based on their posters. Oh, and our team brings you another John Kenneth Muir group review of the ‘80s slasher, Humongous (1982). So, grab your candy and settle in for a Halloween episode to remember! *****SPOILERS FOR GODZILLA MINUS ONE*****

I was thinking a lot about Dave Zee’s criticism of the protagonist in “Godzilla Minus One”, and I loved it because it just shows how significantly our lives impact how we view a film. Of course Dave couldn’t easily like this guy. I respect what he said about his experience of being a father and the role sacrifice can play in relationships and parenting. I was really won over by his critique even though I gave the film a 9.5.

The reason why this protagonist works for me lies in the films themes. The first two themes are in direct contradiction very intentionally- Japan’s long history of nobility in self-sacrifice, Seppuku to Kamikaze, being challenged by the theme that every life is precious, and idea exacerbated by the devastation of war. Clearly Kōichi’s failure as a Kamikaze pilot and failure to engage in the battle of the beach is not noble and conventional storytelling wisdom insists that a character like this has to die, he is destined, no required, to die, for balance to be restored. Though I wonder how many people in real life would struggle with this dilemma of self-preservation motivated by a deep fear of death pitted against their duty to a higher cause. Does every human lacking in nobility deserve death?

I think why this film makes people, including me, cry is because its most important theme is actually grace and forgiveness. Not only does it challenge a past culture that sees greatest honor in self-sacrifice, but it also says people deserve forgiveness for their humanity. Noriko loves him enough to forgive him and sacrifice herself- it was one of the most painful heartfelt expressions of love I’ve seen in a movie in a long time. She sacrificed herself for him despite his inability to do the same for her. The film is imploring the audience to find forgiveness the way she does. The story takes this even further to the finale where we would expect the scales to be balanced when Kōichi is staged to die with “honor” and suffer the way he deserves for the greater good, but no… he gets forgiveness. Does this man’s self preservation make him so awful that he deserves to die, or is he actually much more similar to you and me? How many of us would crash a plane for our country, how many of us would un into an assuredly deadly confrontation to save strangers? Does that makes us lesser, or does that make us human? Does that make us not deserve our life? It’s hard to say, but I cry at the end of “Godzilla Minus One” because grace is perhaps the one thing most lacking in this world.

Closing note for the scene where Kōichi is being an absolute jerk to this baby/child… I feel that scene is clearly just a manifestation of his own self hatred. He doesn’t want to be this child’s father because he doesn’t think he deserves to even be alive. Of course, the child is completely a victim in this situation and that makes the main character much less likable, but that’s because this is a movie about a complicated person dealing with feelings of his own self-worth. He feels he deserves to be dead, not the father of this child. The ending may feel a little Pollyanna Hollywood, I get it and I hate that stuff too, but for the purposes of the themes it’s completely correct. Ultimately, the redemption and the forgiveness given to Kōichi allows him to move on and become the father of this child in a way he couldn’t have before. In all the futile death and destruction of a war then Godzilla, would the world of this film truly be better if he died? Would the catharsis of his death make us feel better?

I’ll shut up now, but as a horror fan who finds joy in the bleak and the macabre, I also find genuine catharsis in a happy ending in this world full of nightmares.

Thanks for another great podcast Jay and co. Listen to this one when I had some boring stuff that needed to be done on my computer…
My absolute favourite part of this was Doc. Shock’s Macabre film History segment. When he talked about Ariana Grande experiencing a ‘fly in the car randomly’ I couldn’t help but smile… Just to silence any sceptics out there: ‘A fly in the car randomly’ is 100% proof positive of a demon. There is no other explanation. Flies only ever appear in cars when there is a demon. Must have been a traumatic experience for Ariana 🙂

I’ve listened to everything you’ve put out this month Jay, and I tried, really tried, to be caught up to listen to this episode on Halloween, but I just finished the last episode and started this show on this lovely Nov 1, Day of the Dead.

Is this perhaps your most legendary run of podcast releases? The finale of the top 10 of 2022, all the top 10s for 2023, and then an additional 10 hours of content. Holy f***ing sh*t balls! Why don’t you have a recurring donate button at least you psycho!? Halloween is a giving time of year and we all owe you for this massive onslaught of entertainment!!!
