I enjoy the first 2/3s of New Nightmare with the meta take on Freddy. It’s also a solid mystery with Heather trying to figure out what’s going on. It falls apart in the end and the climax is underwhelming. It’s still better than parts 2 and 6. Maybe 5 as well.

I find myself agreeing with Ron about Freddy vs Jason. I think it’s the best possible version of a crossover movie that could be made. It has some good kills, cool scenes like Jason being on fire and both monsters are portayed in line with their characters from the other movies.

Also cool hearing Little Miss Horror Nerd and Ron podcasting together again.

I want more of series reviews like this and I know Ron did all the franchises on Zombie 7, but some are worth revisting since it’s been a long time. Scream for instance, the new movies suck but parts 1 – 4 are fun.

I gotta chime in on Ron’s side on Freddy vs. Jason… Look, this is a fan fiction, much like modern Star Wars films, and should not really be considered canon. It’s as logical a conceit as possible given the criteria. Any cross over where there is a major disparity in the two worlds is going to require some level of contrivance. This film is ridiculous, it’s over the top, and it is darn near perfect for what it set out to be. My only complaint is that it should’ve been made in 1989.

Okay, so when Doc, Jay, and Wolfman originally reviewed this franchise on Horror Movie Podcast, I was disheartened because Jay was really dismissive- frustrating but understandable because he just doesn’t love the idea of a dream monster and Doc and Wolfman were more indifferent to the franchise. So of course I was super excited to hear that a true fan of the franchise was going to be taking on a franchise review here. To Jay’s credit, he’s really being incredibly open minded about this franchise this time, and it’s been fun to hear Ron’s specific brand of Fred Head enthusiasm… but, I feel like Ron’s allegiance is first and foremost to Lisa Wlcox and Robert Englund. That’s great, but my allegiance is first and foremost to Wes Craven and Heather Langenkamp. It’s funny but frustrating to hear poor Heather get the Ron Martin treatment…. ugh lol. I get that she’s not an outstanding actress, but I find her so relatable and endearing. Nancy is my favorite slasher protagonist and part of that is Heather Langenkamp’s natural likability. Maybe if Heather would’ve stayed at Ron’s meet and greet a little longer this would be a different story 😉 Now granted, I really do not like the finale of Nightmare 7, but I feel like the film got unfairly done dirty by Ron in this review. The classic duplicity of being apologetic to the Dream Master and putting a magnifying glass on Nightmare 7. I guess this just means that Gillman Joel and I need to do Nancy Wes trilogy one day without crapping all over Heather Langenkamp the whole time lol. You’re a turkey Ron Martin! But I love ya anyway.

A turkey is one of the finest things I have ever been called. Its just a personal preference with Heather. Her acting style is not for me, but I do understand she is endearing to most and is the go to “it” girl for this franchise (which I begrudge, but do not agree with). I was also critical of the acting in NIghtmare 5 WIlcox included, so it could be a directorial thing as well. I will agree that that Heather was the right girl for the first film.

I’d love to hear Ron Martin review another franchise. My favorite is Friday 13th. I’d be interested in hearing Ron’s take after these exciting elm street reviews

My whole archive is at zombie7.com where I did nothing but franchises for ten years, including this one. Looking back at those now, I can tell my perspective of them has shifted just a bit.

I’m glad y’all brought up how much us 80s kids would chatter on playground with friends about the rumors of Freddy Jason coming out. It was like an urban legend always wanting it yet took 15 years to get it.
